‘Islamaphobic’ Coke can incident sparks boycott

United Airlines is being boycotted by people who are appalled after a woman burst into tears after an alleged ‘Islamophobic’ incident on a flight.

Tahera Ahmad, a Muslim US university chaplain, says that a United Airlines flight attendant refused to give her a drink in an unopened can in case she used it “as a weapon”.

Ahmad told her story in a Facebook post from the air

Ahmad, who is Director of Interfaith Engagement and Associate Chaplain at Northwestern University in Illinois, claimed she was on a flight and asked a flight attendant for an unopened can of Coca-Cola.

Her request was refused, she says, because the attendant claimed Ahmad – who wears a Hijab in her Facebook profile picture – may have used it “as a weapon on the plane.”

Yet, Ahmed said in a Facebook post, the attendant then immediately proceeded to hand the male passenger sitting next to her an unopened can of beer.

When Ahmad challenged the flight attendant on why the man next to her was apparently able to have an unopened can without being a security threat, the attendant said she was “unauthorized [sic] to give unopened cans to people because they may use it as a weapon on the plane” and then “quickly grabbed” the man’s unopened can of beer and opened it, according to Ahmad.

“She was clearly discriminating against me,” Ahmad wrote in an emotional Facebook post from the plane, before adding that she had expected other passengers around her to come to her defence, but none did and one man shouted at her “You Moslem [sic], you need to shut the f** up.”

Ahmad claimed she couldn’t help but cry because she thought “people would defend me and say something” and could “feel the hate” in the voice of the passenger who yelled at her.

She added the hashtag ‪#‎IslamophobiaISREAL‬ to her Facebook account of the experience.

The hashtag #UnitedForTahera soon spread on Twitter, as supporters pledged not to use United Airlines until it apologised for what what called a display of “blind, idiotic hatred.”

Ahmad posted an update after the flight at 6.30pm UK time, saying that both the flight attendant and the pilot on the plane had apologised, with the attendant saying that her behaviour was “utterly rude”.

The pilot of the flight had helped her to file a complaint, she said, although the airline itself had still not communicated with her directly.

But United Airlines said in a statement that it was “reaching out to her”.

It said: “United is a company that strongly supports diversity and inclusion, and we and our partners do not discriminate against our employees or customers. We are reaching out directly to Ms. Ahmad to get a better understanding of what occurred during the flight.

“We are also discussing the matter that Ms. Ahmad describes with Shuttle America, our regional partner that operated the flight. We look forward to speaking with Ms. Ahmad and hope to have the opportunity to welcome her back.”

THE PROPHET’S (ﷺ) RAMADAN SHARIF SERMON

Baihaqi reported on the authority of Salman Al-Farsi (Radhi Allah ‘Anh) that Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasalaam) delivered a sermon on the last day of the month of Sha’ban. In it he (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasalaam) said,

“O People! The month of Allah (Ramadan) has come with its mercies, blessings and forgivenesses. Allah has decreed this month the best of all months. The days of this month are the best among the days and the nights are the best among the nights and the hours during Ramadan are the best among the hours. This is a month in which you have been invited by Him (to fast and pray). Allah has honoured you in it. In every breath you take is a reward of Allah, your sleep is worship, your good deeds are accepted and your invocations are answered.

Therefore, you must invoke your Lord in all earnestness with hearts free from sin and evil, and pray that Allah may help you to keep fast, and to recite the Holy Qur’an. Indeed!, miserable is the o­ne who is deprived of Allah’s forgiveness in this great month. While fasting remember the hunger and thirst o­n the Day of Judgement. Give alms to the poor and needy. Pay respect to your elders, have sympathy for your youngsters and be kind towards your relatives and kinsmen. Guard your tongue against unworthy words, and your eyes from scenes that are not worth seeing (forbidden) and your ears from sounds that should not be heard.

Be kind to orphans so that if your children may become orphans they will also be treated with kindness. Do repent to Allah for your sins and supplicate with raised hands at the times of prayer as these are the best times, during which Allah Almighty looks at His servants with mercy. Allah Answers if they supplicate, Responds if they call, Grants if He is asked, and Accepts if they entreat. O people! you have made your conscience the slave of your desires.

Make it free by invoking Allah for forgiveness. Your back may break from the heavy load of your sins, so prostrate yourself before Allah for long intervals, and make this load lighter. Understand fully that Allah has promised in His Honour and Majesty that, people who perform salat and sajda (prostration) will be guarded from Hell-fire o­n the Day of Judgement.

O people!, if anyone amongst you arranges for iftar (meal at sunset) for any believer, Allah will reward him as if he had freed a slave, and Allah will forgive him his sins. A companion asked: “but not all of us have the means to do so” The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasalaam) replied: Keep yourself away from Hell-fire though it may consist of half a date or even some water if you have nothing else.

O people!, anyone who during this month cultivates good manners, will walk over the Sirat (bridge to Paradise) o­n the day when feet will tend to slip. For anyone who during this month eases the workload of his servants, Allah will make easy his accounting, and for anyone who doesn’t hurt others during this month, Allah will safeguard him from His Wrath o­n the Day of Judgement. Anyone who respects and treats an orphan with kindness during this month, Allah shall look at him with kindness o­n that Day. Anyone who treats his kinsmen well during this month, Allah will bestow His Mercy o­n him o­n that Day, while anyone who mistreats his kinsmen during this month, Allah will keep away from His Mercy.

Whomever offers the recommended prayers during this month, Allah will save him from Hell, and whomever observes his obligations during this month, his reward will be seventy times the reward during other months. Whomever repeatedly invokes Allah’s blessings o­n me, Allah will keep his scale of good deeds heavy, while the scales of others will be tending to lightness. Whomever recites during this month an ayat (verse) of the Holy Qur’an, will get the reward of reciting the whole Qur’an in other months.

O people!, the gates of Paradise remain open during this month. Pray to your Lord that they may not be closed for you. While the gates of Hell are closed, pray to your Lord that they never open for you. Satan has been chained, invoke your Lord not to let him dominate you.”

Ali ibn Talib (Radhi Allah ‘Anh) said: “I asked, ‘O messenger of Allah, what are the best deeds during this month’?” ‘He replied: ‘O Abu-Hassan, the best of deeds during this month is to be far from what Allah has forbidden’.”

“Hoş gör yâ Hû”; “Hiçbir mahlûkâtı incitme! Hiçbir mahlûkattan da incinme!” tâlimâtıdır.

Diğer bir mânâda; “Sebeplere takılıp kalma, asıl müsebbibin, yani Cenâb-ı Hakkʼın takdîrine dikkat kesil; murâd-ı ilâhîye râzı ol!” telkinidir.

Fakat bu hoş görme, Rabb’in affıyla hoş gördüğü şeyler hakkındadır. Yoksa Cenâb-ı Hakkʼın gazabını celbeden şeyleri hoş görmek değildir.

“Bu da geçer yâ Hû” ifadesi, kula şöyle seslenir:

“Ey insan! Sana gelen gamlar ve sürurlar, senin gönül hânende bir misafirdir. Sakın onların dâimî olduğunu zannedip ümitsiz olma! Gelen fânî gamlara üzülme, çünkü onlar gidicidir. Fânî sürurlara da fazla kapılma; zira onların da bekāsı yoktur.”

“Edeb yâ Hû” ifadesi; edebe riâyete çağıran bir îkaz olduğu gibi, aynı zamanda “Yâ ilâhî! Edep lûtfeyle!” mânâsında bir niyazdır. Hazret-i Mevlânâʼnın buyurduğu gibi:

“Her kim edepten nasîbini almamışsa, o, insan değildir. Çünkü insanla hayvan arasındaki fark, edeptir. Gözünü aç da Allâh’ın kitâbı olan Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’e dikkatle bak! Göreceksin ki o, âyet âyet edepten ibârettir.”

“Hîç” lâfzına gelince; bu, benlikten sıyrılmayı ifâde eden bir kelimedir. Çünkü ilâhî sırlardan bir nasîb alabilmek, nefsânî arzulardan sıyrılabilmekle başlar. Dolayısıyla mânevî tekâmülün başlangıç noktası, “hiçlik” hâline varabildikten sonradır. Tasavvufun gâyesi de; ilâhî kudret, azamet ve saltanat karşısında kulun kendi âcizlik ve hiçliğini idrâk etmesidir.
